Bari
Basilica of Saint Nicholas

Beneath the Romanesque basilica in Bari rest the relics of Saint Nicholas — a house of prayer shared by those who call him Nicholas and those who call him Nicola. The crypt is cool; the upper church gathers light from the Adriatic. Sailors, families, and travellers have come here for centuries with the same simple request.
A pilgrim of Palomeya goes down to the tomb with a candle and a list of names. The offering is made in person, in the quiet of that stone room. Palomeya does not represent the basilica. A traveller simply arrives, prays, and returns with a record of having stood there.
